James Grubola Exhibition at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts “James Grubola: The Friday (and Thursday) Sessions Figurative and Dance Drawings / 2014 – 2017”

Hite Art Institute is pleased to present a two-part exhibition featuring and celebrating the work of distinguished teaching professorJames Grubola. Open on the Republic Bank First Friday Hop from 11am – 6pm at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts.

This winter, the Cressman Center will host a solo exhibition of new drawings by Grubola that emerge from his return to a routine of life-drawing sessions.Grubola has always drawn from life, and for 43 years he often worked on Fridays from a model. Recently, a sabbatical and break from his prodigious teaching enabled him to return to this practice. In the past these sessions served as studies for other projects. However, in this exhibition, life drawing is treated as its own form of artistic expression. Grubola has also spent many years working from moving bodies, and has recently returned to drawing from rehearsals at the Louisville Ballet. These encounters form his second new body of work, The Thursday Sessions.

In addition to a solo exhibition at the Hite’s downtown Cressman Center for Visual Arts, the campus Schneider Hall Galleries will host “Selections from the Teachings of JamesGrubola.” The show chronicles Grubola’s significant impact as a teacher through the work of his students. The show features nearly sixty works―new and old―by Grubola’s former students. Both exhibitions open this January.
