John Brooks: “A Map of Scents” Opening Reception Friday, July 12

“A Map of Scents” by John Brooks – Artist Reception, Friday, July 12 – 5:30 – 8:00 pm – Artist remarks and poetry reading: 7:00 pm

Valet Parking at Proof on Main

Visual artist and poet John Brooks explores themes of identity, memory, death, and place while considering questions of contemplation, the expression of emotion, the transformative power and the emotional resonance of particular experiences and what Max Beckmann described as “the deepest feeling about the mystery of being.”

“A Map of Scents” represents the first complete body of work that fully integrates all aspects of Brooks’ creative practice by employing collage and photography as a basis for composition and his own poetry for atmosphere and inspiration. Painted with the restraint of a poet’s eye but filled with singular colors that reveal mood and emotions, these paintings are an exercise in spareness as well as a comprehensive representation of Brooks’ artistic conceptions.
