Living outside his native homeland of Sweden for over two decades, Hawk has maintained an unmistakable Northern-European quality to the tone and technique imbibed within his paintings.
In 2018, Mr. Alfredson arrived to Louisville, KY. Prior to his move to River City, Hawk called New York City his long-time home. The artist first arrived to the U.S. in 1995 and has continued to extensively exhibit work both within the U.S. and internationally since then. Museum exhibitions include The Katonah Museum in upstate New York (in a group show curated by Thelma Golden of the Whitney Museum), Japan’s Prefectoral Museum, New York’s Alternative Museum, Australia’s Regional Art Museum in Orange, NSW, and the historic Nordic Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Gallery exhibitions within the U.S. can be counted in the hundreds and include the cities Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boca Raton, Boston, and more frequently, New York City.
While living in New York’s renowned Hotel Chelsea from 2001-2010, thousands of international visitors had the opportunity to discover over 50 original paintings by Mr. Alfredson which were prominently displayed in the hotel’s lobby and also throughout the ten floors of it’s spacious Victorian-era staircase. Visiting documentarians and photographers to the NYC landmark hotel frequently sought out Hawk’s elusive presence for interviews regarding both his work and his unique personal commentary on the energetic milieu of the hotel’s artistic scene in which Hawk’s dynamic oil paintings simultaneously influenced and thrived.
In 2011, Mr. Alfredson sat down with acclaimed British actor Richard E. Grant for the BBC/Sky Atlantic series “Hotel Secrets” (episode 2) to discuss the darker side of life at the Hotel Chelsea. Recounting similar territory, Abel Ferrara’s 2006 film “Chelsea on the Rocks” documents the lives of the artists living in the hotel, past and present with Hawk speaking candidly throughout Ferrara’s film on his personal experiences while living and painting in the hotel.
Since 1999, Hawk’s artwork has appeared in major feature films as part of production design. Selected films include Mystery Men (Universal Pictures), I AM LEGEND (Warner Bros.) and Ocean’s 13 (Universal Pictures).
Hawk’s distinct painting style invites sensual observation and has attracted the attention of literary publishers leading to the cover imagery of works by acclaimed writer Jeff VanderMeer as well as many international authors . Hawk’s work has also appeared on over a dozen LP’s/CD’s for music bands ranging in style from prog-rock to heavy metal to folk.
In 2006, Art & Antiques Magazine proclaimed Mr. Alfredson as “one of the most collectible of the European contemporary surrealists of the new century”.
