Join us to celebrate the opening of Sunny Ra’s exhibition of recent work at the Quills Nulu location.
In conjunction with Republic Bank’s First Friday Hop, Sunny will be in the cafe to discuss her work from 6-9pm.
This will be a great night to try out Quills selection of craft beer, natural wines, Elixir Kombucha and specialty coffee out on our patio. Bourbon Cheese, and Blacksmith Beef and Sweet & Sour chicken skewers will be available.
Sunny Ra’s most recent paintings uses the landscape as a means to discuss her struggle in negotiating between her inherited Korean culture and the American culture in which she grew up here in Louisville, Kentucky. Growing up, Ra felt like an outsider in the Korean community because she didn’t know how to read or speak Hangul well. But she also didn’t identify with being American since people asked her where she was from and complimented her on how well she spoke English. Ra grew up believing she didn’t belong anywhere, perhaps nowhere.
It is in this middle ground, between both Korean and American cultures that Ra’s landscapes emerge through the obscurity of her dark palette with moments of color that illuminate the night.
