Zephyr Gallery is pleased to present “Project 20: Failure in Progress,” an exhibition of five contemporary artists whose work challenges the metric of success and investigates the constructive function of failure in the production and reception of art. Josh Azzarella, Andrew Cozzens, Gautam Rao, Alex Serpentini, and Melissa Vandenberg each invoke failure in the making of their work, highlighting imperfections, misfires, and even the deterioration and destruction of the artwork itself.
In their juxtaposition, “success” and “failure” usually represent two poles on a scale of absolute outcomes. In this exhibition, the constructed binary instead marks the boundary of a liminal space that offers an opportunity to contemplate experimentation, process, and inquiry. The five artists featured here counter-intuitively embrace failure– employing it as subject matter, technique, and material–thus dislocating it from its otherwise negative connotations.
“Failure in Progress” will be on view at Zephyr Gallery from November 3 to December 30, 2017, with an artist talk, reception, and performance on November 17. The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
Zephyr gallery is open to the public Thursday through Saturday between 11:00am and 6:00pm.
