PAUL PALETTI GALLERY
See Me Clearly
Women Photographers/Women Photographed
September 6 – December 31, 2018
An Asian American actress striving to be a leading lady when the laws of the day forbade her from even kissing a male costar of another race. A pioneering photographer who marched with Patton and was the first to photograph the horror that was Buchenwald. A model who changed the artist/model paradigm to participate only in photos that fulfilled her art.
This show will highlight the history of photography told through Julia Margaret Cameron’s photo of Alice Liddell, for whom ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was written; through Edward Weston’s photos of Charis Wilson, his model, muse and wife; through the photos of Group f/64, including Imogene Cunningham and Sonia Noskowiak; through pioneers of photojournalism like Margaret Bourke-White; the people who made history , like Amelia Earhart; and contemporary photographers who pushed the boundaries of popular aesthetics in different directions such as Ann Noggle and Lynn Geesaman.
This ambitious show features women: examining their prowess, influence and agency as both photographer and subject, artist and muse-and how with the passage of time and progress how our views on their work, and the works in which they appeared, have changed.
Comprised of over 60 images by 25 artists, the photographs included in the exhibit are primarily drawn from the Gallery’s collection. They are displayed together for the first time with historical information, stories, and personal notes, explaining the context and importance of the images and the people who made them.
We hope that you will join us for the opening reception for See Me Clearly which will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 5-8pm. Additional associated events will also be forthcoming.
