“Works of May” by Jordan Humbert
June 7th through June 30th, 2019
Opening reception with the artist; Friday, June 7th from 6-10pm
“Works of May” is the latest series of work from Louisville Artist Jordan Humbert. Humbert has almost exclusively used llamas as the subject of his paintings for the last five years. Although the subject remains the same Humbert’s paintings can vary drastically in materials and span from abstract to realistic renderings.
This latest body of work was greatly influenced after revisiting a favorite documentary, “Jim Dine: A Self-Portrait on the Walls”. In the film Dine creates his work directly on the blank walls of a gallery in Ludwigsburg, Germany. He works fast and he works with some unconventional mediums; motor oil, a loaf of bread, etc. The pieces in this series were made in a similar manner. Rather than pull from previous work, I filled my studio with large blank white squares, worked fast, and moved from piece to piece with little time for reflection. During the process, I decided to limit my materials to only what could fit on a small barstool; graphite, charcoal, white and black oil, and a few other odds and ends. What emerged was a body of work that has a movement and energy that can only come from working in such a ferocious manner.
Jordan Humbert is a painter based in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a graduate of The University of Louisville’s Hite Art Academy. Originally from Northern Kentucky, he has made Louisville home and is an active member of the local music and art scene.
